About what age is it good to train your dog to be a guard dog?
I plan on getting a German Shepard puppy and I read it is best to get help from professional trainers but what would be a good age to start the training? Also, how would I go about training the puppy not to bite during the nipping stage? I don't plan on having the dog bite anybody but it seems that the no biting rule would conflict with the guard dog aspect while the puppy is learning. Any help?
You have to find a really, really good breeder. German Shepherds are so overbred they have a lot of temperament and health issues. I handle for a woman who breeds German Shepherds in New York, and if that is too far for you she might have other contacts close to you. If you want a sound, even tempered dog that will have the ability to guard while having the ability to be called off by you, you can't go to a pet store or random neighbor who happened to let their pet dogs breed. As a young puppy, you should focus on obedience and not nipping (by ignoring, squealing like a puppy, or a quick touch correction like a dog would do). This isn't a no biting rule, but simple manner in the home. When the dog is told to be on guard duty, it can resort to biting if necessary, but should act as a deterrent first. Most dogs don't really have to be taught much to guard, most of it come naturally and territorially. If you want the dog to be trained in protection, otherwise called schutzhund, that is another story and takes really hard core training to research and find a reliable trainer for. Please, the first step is a good breeder. You don't want an aggressive dog, but one that is naturally obedient, willing to please you, and protective.
