1080! HDTV Resolution, shrinks to 575 lines when projected... Is it true?
I am very confused about all this HDTV resolutions. I have searched online and I find more confusing information all over.
I am hoping someone can exp-lain in the simplest terms how this would work.
I have a 1024x768 native resolution projector (optoma ep719), it's specs say it is HDTV ready to 1080i.
If I plug it to a receiver that outputs 1080!, but the projector is 1027x768, won't that shrink the image (with black bars on top and bottom)??? Thus leaving me with a 575 resolution? Why does the projector specify 1080i compatibility???
Simply said, I have a HDTV receiver, and I want to plug it to my 1024x768 to watch hdtv... is that possible???
Your projector is 1080i. Just set your other equipment, like your upscaling DVD player or blu-ray player, to use that same resolution and you'll be fine. The TV will resize whatever signal it receives accordingly.

1080i is a sort of weird resolution, because as it implies, it's interlaced but most HD displays don't work that way. What will actually happen is that your projector will take the 1080i signal, which only consists of 540 lines each second, and resizes it for its native resolution, which is 1024x768.
Note that the 540 lines being sent from your player isn't literally lines 1 through 540. It's the 540 even or odd numbered lines that make up a full 1080p picture. So one second the evens are sent, then the odds, then the evens. The TV uses a complex algorithm to resize those to fit its screen and then "guesses" at the missing pixels so that you still see 1024 horizontal lines of resolution, even though about half of them are "guesses" generated by the TV at any time.
With a full 1080p TV receiving a 1080p signal, there is no guessing going on.
