Any tips on stopping pet rats climbing pipes?
I have 2 female rats and like to let them out of their cage for a couple of hours each day to run around. Most of the time I stay and supervise and play with them but ocassionally I have to leave them unattended (eg to answer the phone or go to the loo) I'm sure all you rat owners know what good climbers they are. The room is virtually rat proof, apart from my combi-boiler which is attached to the wall about 4 feet high. It has 4 pipes leading up to it from the ground and the rats have already made attempts to climb them. If they succeed they will get inside the boiler (it's open from the bottom) and could cause serious problems for themselves or me (chewing thru wires, gas leaks, I don't know?) And thats besides the fact that the pipes will get red hot in winter when the central heating is switched on. Any tips to stop them climbing the pipes? Someone suggested putting vaseline on the pipes. Would this work or just melt off? Sensible ideas from rat owners who've had similar problems?
It's probably best to box the pipes in . When you have to leave the room you could make sure that they arenot tyringto chew through your handiwork by giving them a treat to distract them. alternatively you could pop them back in their cage until you return and then get them out again.
