Synthetic rinks are cool when real ice is not available, but certainly there are differences that cannot be matched with ice (no matter what sythethic rink companies will claim!). It can help some, but as the surface properties are different, your actual "training" should be done on "real" ice. Afterall, "real" ice is used at the Olympics.
Skating on a synthetic surface is "slower". You have the drag from friction, which you wouldn't not get on ice. You won't experience the "slippage" you get on the ice, which you would need for some of the moves, like stops, slide moves, lunges, spin entrances, etc.
You can't see your edge/toe pick marks well on a synthetic surface. Your tracings help to see if you've done things correctly and aid in correcting your moves. Toe pick "gouges" in the ice can tell you if you're picking correctly.
Unless you have a synthetic rink minimally the size of a standard ice rink, you would have to tighten up the layout of your skating program and moves . . . not having enough room makes a big difference. You will hold back a lot - with jumping distance, speed, leg/arm extentions, etc - simply because you feel so scrunched in a small area.
Also, depending on where you have the synthetic rink, skating in a warm area is easier on the muscles than skating in a cold environment. With "real" ice, you obviously have to deal with the cold factor . . . if your body isn't accustomed to the chill, it will affect your muscles (tightening them up) and performance.
Just some thoughts. Stick with ICE if you want to truly make it to the Olympics (in figure skating). Hope that helps.
